Nigerians ignorant of surveyors’ services, says Oyegbola

The President, Nigerian Institution of Surveyors, Mr. Akinloye Oyegbola, has lamented that despite the importance of surveying to national development, many Nigerians do not know when to seek the services of surveyors.

He also expressed concern that in the construction of bridges, houses and other structures, surveyors were not being accorded their full compliments as members of other registered professional bodies.

Oyegbola said these during an interactive session in Yenagoa on Friday during his one-day working visit to the Bayelsa State branch of the institution.

The NIS president indicated that the greatest challenge facing the surveying profession was that many people did not know when to seek the services of a surveyor, saying that some people instead engaged the services of quacks and non-professionals.

Oyegbola stated, “People often forget that in anything you do on land, survey comes in first. But many people don’t know about this fact and those who seem to know actually know very little about it.

“On those colourful bridges and imposing structures you see across the country, the surveyors have worked tirelessly to make the columns stand and balanced as they look, but many people do not understand that.”
