The President of the Senate, Dr. Bukola Saraki, has said that Nigeria should not wait until natural disasters occur before action is taken.

He said the Senate would invite the National Emergency Management Agency and other relevant bodies to brief it on the warning of tremor in some parts of the country.

Speaking during an interactive session with journalists in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital on Sunday, Saraki noted that it was better to prevent disasters than to allow them to occur and the nation would be counting losses.

He added that the Senate was prepared to ensure that appropriate proactive measures were taken to forestall the occurrence of disasters in any part of the country and to put in place disaster management mechanisms to address those that could not be prevented.

Saraki said, “When the Senate resumes, we need to have a lot of briefings in the area of the warning on tremor and other disasters like earthquakes to find out what is the level of the threat and also NEMA (National Emergency Management Agency) should also let us know their preparations.”

Counsel to the Senate President, Bukoka Saraki, Paul Usoro, SAN, on Wednesday disclosed to the Code of Conduct Tribunal, CCT, that the prosecution tendered a different property as evidence from that Saraki declared.
Usoro said this making reference to some letters written by one Engineer Charlistus Ugwuagu, an occupant of No 15a and b on Macdonald Street in Ikoyi Lagos, property, to the Presidential Committee on Implementation Committee on Sales of Federal Government Property.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, in one of its charges accused Saraki of declaring the asset that does not exist.
But Usoro said the commission made an error in its evidence tendered before the tribunal.

Usoro explained that according to Ugwuagu’s letter, the property on 15a Macdonald Street Ikoyi Street in Lagos has four bedroom bungalow, but that the one contained in EFCC’s charge had four bungalows and two boys quarters.

This, the principal witness who is an operative of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Michael Wetkas admitted to saying “Our investigation showed that there were three pieces of property located at McDonald road, Ikoyi, 15, block A and B, and 15b.”

Usoro while arguing that the property under contention may not be that of the Senate President said, “The description on Ugwuagu’s letter shows it does not fit the description of that on the evidence as contained in exhibit 14.”
Wetkas while responding to a question from Usoro also confirmed the difference and said, “Yes the property in Egwuagu’s letter is different from that contained in exhibit 14.

“When people buy properties, they can expand it,” he added.

The Chairman of CCT, Danladi Umar adjourned the matter till Tuesday next week for continuation of trial.

An operative with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Michael Wetkas on Monday told the Code of Conduct Tribunal, CCT, how the Senate President, Bukola Saraki paid over N522m for a property in Ikoyi Lagos.
Wetkas who was led in evidence by counsel to EFCC, Rotimi Jacobs tendered cheques allegedly drawn from Saraki’s personal account and the account of his firm, Carlie Properties Investments Limited meant for payment of the property at 17, Mcdonald Street, Ikoyi, Lagos.

EFCC claimed that Saraki through his companies paid a total of N522,060,000 in seven tranches for the said property which is one of those the Senate President failed to declare to the Code of Conduct Bureau while he was governor of Kwara State.
Wetkas said the property was procured in the name of Tiny Tee Limited from the Presidential Committee on the Sale of Federal Government Properties between 2006 and 2007.

He said, “The part payment was from GTB account of Carlie Properties and Investment Ltd.

“There is a draft before me for N256,300,000 which was part payment for 17, Mcdonald Street, Ikoyi, Lagos.

“There is another draft before me of N12,815,000 which was part payment for 17, Mcdonald, Ikoyi.
“There is another draft of a total of N24,090,000. That total is broken down into, N20m from Zenith Bank and N4,090,000 from GTB. The total of the two are part payment for 17 Mcdonald, Ikoyi.

“The N20m from the Zenith Bank account of Carlie Properties and Investments Ltd while N4,090,000 was also from Carlie Properties and Investment Ltd with GTB.

“There is another draft before me for N180,675,000 dated April 3, 2007. It was also part payment for 17 Mcdonald Ikoyi from the defendant’s personal account with GTB.

“I have another draft of N36,135,000 dated January 10, 2007. The draft was cleared in Carlie Properties and Investments Ltd’s account in GTB and that also forms part payment for 17 Mcdonald, Ikoyi.

“There is another draft of N12,045,000 dated January 10, 2007.”
