Fire consumes N16bn property in Abuja, Lagos – FFS

The Federal Fire Service (FFS) on Tuesday said property worth over N16 billion was lost in 809 fire incidents in Abuja and Lagos from January 2015 to June 2016. A document made available to newsmen in Abuja by the FFS also disclosed that within 18 months property worth N70b was saved, while 29 people lost their lives, and 58 were rescued.

The document further said that the incidents involved 79 public and government buildings, 239 private buildings, three educational establishments, nine shops and 61 petrol stations, among others. It said that electrical equipment was responsible for 28 fire incidents; electric sparks were responsible for 119, gas explosion was responsible for five; while high voltage was responsible for five and bomb blast responsible for two of the incidents.

The document said that most of the fire outbreaks were as a result of human failing, and therefore, expressed the need for people to be more careful and watchful in this dry season to minimise the rate of fire incidents. “Fire is friendly as we handle it carefully, but destroys and kills on our carelessness; most fires in our homes start from the kitchen and kitchen fires result mainly from human failings. “Therefore, kitchen fire outbreaks can be minimised by doing the following: not leaving what you are cooking unattended to,putting your gas cylinder outside your kitchen and returning a leaking cylinder to the dealer . “If your clothing catches fire, stop, drop to the ground and roll over and over on the ground. “Do not run as it will only fan the flames then cover your face with your hands to protect your throat, and limbs from burns,’’ the document said.

The service also advised Nigerians to cool a burn with running cool water for five to 10 minutes to prevent continued burning and relieve the pain. It urged people not to put their generator close to the window or along the corridor because the fumes or smoke could kill quietly . It also advised people not to hoard fuel at home, office or both as it could lead to fire outbreaks and burn persons, adding that people should also stop fueling their generator while the engine was on as it could spark up fire. “We should take the issue of fire safety seriously and join hands to prevent it by abiding by the safety rules and regulations, especially the during the harmattan season so as to guarantee the safety of lives and property,’’ the service said.

Frequent fire outbreaks: NFPA safety experts storm Lagos

IN the last few years, not less than five major fire incidents have been recorded in Lagos with billions of Naira worth of property lost in the process. For instance, just recently, fire razed a major market in Kaduna, the Kaduna State capital, with traders left to count their losses and start appealing to authorities to assist in mitigating their losses. In 2012, the Federal Fire Service said it saved property worth N19.54 billion from various fire incidents, which ravaged parts of the country. But during same period, property valued at N5.95 billion were lost to fire incidents during the period. Statistics also showed that 185 lives were lost in 470 fire incidents in same year. The oil and gas sector recorded the highest number of fire incidents with 168 lives lost in164 incidents. Available statistics also revealed that private residences recorded 96 fire incidents that claimed eight lives, while 10 lives were saved in the period under review. It is as a result of incidents like these that leading safety management outfit, Safety Consultants and Solution Providers Limited, is organising West Africa National Fire Protection Association, NFPA, Conference with the theme: “Building NFPA Compliant Fire Safety Systems,” scheduled for April 18 to 21, 2016 in Lagos Briefing newsmen on the forthcoming conference, Roland Ngong of National Fire Protection Association West Africa, NFPA-WA, who was flanked by Ms. Antonia Beri, Lead Consultant, Safety Consultants and Solution Providers Limited, and Mr. Femi Young, Executive Director, Safety Consultants and Solution Providers Limited, said the conference will draw leading fire safety experts across the United States of America, who would educate Nigerians, especially professionals, on latest developments on safety measures and safety gadgets that prevent hazards, both at the home and the workplace. According to Ngong, his organisation was aware of fatalistic approach of most Nigerians to safety issues, hence the need to bring in experts to help Nigerians understand that they could take their destiny in their own hands. He said: “There are certain areas that NFPA concerns itself with. And that is why we are organising the West Africa NFPA conference. We will be providing training as well as seminars on certain aspects of safety.” Some of the areas expected to be covered in the conference included the Life Safety and Means of Egress. This training will be based on the life safety and means of egress requirements contained in NFPA Life Safety Code. Topics to be covered will include classification of construction and occupancy type, determining occupant load and egress capacity, requirements for protection of vertical openings and hazardous areas, and determining requirements for building services and fire protection features. Another key area to be covered is the Automatic Fire Sprinkler Systems. This training will be based on the fire sprinkler system requirements contained in NFPA Standard for the Installation of Sprinkler Systems. Among experts expected is Russell B. Leavitt. Russ is the Executive of Telgian Corporation, an international firm providing fire, life safety, and asset protection engineering and consulting services. Also expected is John Campbell, who has more than 25 years of experience in the fire protection community, including all areas of the fire sprinkler industry. He has extensive experience in fire suppression system design, fire hazard analysis and fire protection system inspection and testing.

Fire razes shops in Lagos

An early morning fire yesterday razed some shops along Ijaye road, Ogba, Lagos, destroying property worth millions of naira. No life was lost nor was any injury recorded in the incident.
Although the actual cause of the fire could not be ascertained, some people alleged that it started from a bar at No 3, Ijaye Road. They said that it started from the kitchen and later spread to other parts of the bar and then the adjoining shops.
A witness said it took the timely intervention of residents of the area to contain the fire.
“The rescue work was later completed by fire service men who arrived at the place later,” the source said.
He added that policemen from the nearby Ogba Police Station condoned off the scene while rescue operation was on to prevent hoodlums from seizing the opportunity to loot property from the affected shops.
Ibrahim Farinloye, Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) in the South West Region said it was a minor fire outbreak.

Fire guts Christ Embassy Church in Lagos

An early morning fire at the Christ Embassy Church, Ikeja, Lagos has destroyed property worth millions of naira. The fire which lasted several hours started from a heap of refuse near the four 40ft containers used as storage facility within the premises of the church.

Confirming the fire incident, the Lagos State Director of Safety and Fire Services, Rasaq Fadipe said his office got a distress call on the fire a few minutes to 5am and he deployed two fire trucks from Alausa to the scene.
He said the four containers that later caught fire ‎contained various electrical appliances, pumping machines and furniture.
Fadipe who warned residents against careless handling of naked fires, added that no life was lost in the incident.

Lagos Fire: Gov. Ambode Calls Emergency Meeting Eith Petrol Tanker Drivers

Ambode-Tanker FireGovernor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State has summoned Petroleum Products Tanker Drivers’ Union and stakeholders to an emergency meeting on Monday, June 8.
The meeting, Mr. Ambode said, would address the incessant petrol tanker-induced fires in the state.
The governor gave the directive on Saturday during a visit to the scene of the early morning petrol tanker fire at Idimu area of the state.
A similar tanker fire occurred on Tuesday at Iyana-Ipaja area of the state which left several shops and vehicles destroyed.
The Idimu fire which occurred in the wee hours of Saturday at an intersection has also left property worth millions of naira in ruins.
About 34 buildings, 70 shops, one tricycle and one truck were consumed by the fire ignited by a fallen petrol-laden tanker, according to the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA).
“I have directed that we will meet with the union of the tanker drivers and other agencies on Monday morning, and we must make pronouncements relating to the usage of our roads.
“This is another unfortunate accident within one week; unfortunate because we are beginning to lose a lot of our assets and property”, Mr. Ambode said.
Mr. Ambode also said it had become necessary to check the activities of the tanker drivers and enforce the state traffic laws.
“We do not want this to repeat itself again. I have been briefed that there were two tanker drivers actually competing on the road as at midnight including a commercial bus.
“In the process, one of the tanker drivers conveying 33,000 litres of fuel lost control at the bend and spilled its content to as far as five streets”.
He said 34 houses and 70 shops were destroyed by the fire.
Mr. Ambode also commiserated with those affected by the fire and appealed to them to remain calm.
“We will do immediate relief and take enumeration to see how we can address this issue.
“We will do everything in our might to make sure that they go back to their normal lives”, he said.
Giving an account of how the incident occurred, the Director of the Lagos State Fire Service, Rasak Fadipe, said his men responded to the distress call at about 12.08 a.m. on Saturday.
“The prompt response by the rescue officers with the aid of the community helped to prevent the fire from spreading.
“The effort we put in saved the MRS fuel station from being engulfed by the fire and we also saved several buildings here”, he said.
He said the incident also consumed fire- fighting materials that would have been used to contain about 15 to 20 future fire outbreaks.
“As the governor said, something has to be done about this type of incidents”.
Also speaking, Babatunde Kokumo, the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Operations, pledged the support of the Police in addressing the situation.
“We want to see that‎ sanity returns to our roads, particularly sanity among our tanker drivers, tipper drivers and generally among all users of roads in Lagos.
“The government is doing so much for us and we must as a matter of seriousness reciprocate all these gestures by ensuring that we instil sanity”, the DCP said. (NAN)

2 siblings die, 6 injured in Lagos fire

Two children of same parents died yesterday in an early morning fire that engulfed a house at Igbo Efon, in Lekki area of Lagos State. A source said the fire spread as a result of the numerous electrical wires in the house.
A witness said the fire started around 5am from the kitchen but that it was not noticed immediately.
“By the time it was realised that the two children were still trapped in the house, the fire had already spread to the roof top,” the witness said.
Aside the kids that died in the inferno, about six other persons, including the owner of the house, sustained major injuries. The injured are currently receiving treatment in hospitals in the area.
Property worth millions belonging to occupants of the house were also destroyed in the process.
Ibrahim Farinloye, Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) in the South-west Region, who confirmed the fire outbreak said the agency received the information around 5am.
He stated that upon receipt of the information, the agency moved some of its officials to the place.
“On arrival, we discovered that House No. 11 Fabiyi Street, Igbo Efon, Lekki, Lagos State, was on fire. At the scene, we met officials of both the federal and state Fire Service as well as some neighbours battling to put out the fire. We tried to move residents out of the house to a safe place. It was while we were doing head count of those living in the building that we discovered that two children were missing. The bodies of the deceased kids have since been moved to government mortuary,” he added.
Farinloye said fire started from a cooking gas and spread to other parts of the house within ten minutes. He said two kids, a boy and a girl who died in the inferno, were visitors from Ikoyi, and were supposed to stay in the house until after Saturday’s elections.
“Evacuation of occupants was done by neighbours but no one gave detailed information about the visitors. They were said to be hiding under a bed when the fire started. When their host remembered that the children were still inside, it was already too late. They died before help could get to them,” he said.
Farinloye advised members of the public to be careful when cooking, particularly with gas. He said some other people sustained major fire burns while trying to put out the fire and that the injured are currently being treated at various hospitals in the area.
