Withdraw waterfront communities’ eviction notice, group tells Ambode

A group known as the Nigerian Slum and Informal Settlement Federation has demanded the retraction of a seven-day ultimatum issued by the Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, to waterfront communities across the state.

The group said the notice was a continuation of the anti-poor policies of the Lagos State Government.

The letter dated October 11, 2016, was signed by leaders of Ago Egun, Ebute-Ilaje in Bariga, Orisunbare, Sogunro, Ofin in Ikorodu, Ajagbe Sari Iganmu, Abete Ojora, Itun Agan, Mosafejo Oworonshoki, Tarkwa Bay, Olufunke Majidun, Tomaro, Oko Agbon, Otumare Ilaje, Baiyeku, Irede and Otodo Gbame communities.

Ambode had last week said all illegal structures on the state’s waterfront would be demolished following the rising cases of kidnapping.

The group said it had on October 4 delivered a letter to the governor during a peaceful protest, demanding for partnership towards a pro-poor urban agenda in Lagos.

Its letter read in part, “During our peaceful protest, we were addressed by the Senior Special Adviser to the Governor on Civic Engagement and invited for a meeting on October 5, at which we presented the concerns of three different constituencies of the urban poor such as persons living in slum settlements, persons working in the informal economy and persons living with disabilities.

“At the close of the meeting, we agreed to have another meeting on October 11 to present proposals on core issues of housing, security of tenure and protection of livelihoods to help Lagos become an inclusive megacity. It was with great shock and dismay that we heard the public announcement on October 9, purporting to give a seven-day notice of demolition to all informal waterfront communities across Lagos State.

“Consequently, and with heavy hearts, we hereby denounce your announcement of October 9 and demand official and immediate retraction. We have no choice but to suspend all dialogue until such a notice is retracted.”

The group said forced eviction would not solve the administration’s problems or set the state on its part to becoming a global mega city.

“The only path to a real mega city status is to embrace the urban poor and partner with us to find lasting solutions to challenging urban problems such as security and development,” the group added.

Lagos communities comply with open street gates policy

Lagos propertyCHECKS and feedbacks from residents and communities across Lagos State have revealed that there has been gradual compliance with the policy of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode to keep their street gates open between 5.30a.m. and midnight daily.

Some of the streets, which have thrown open their gates include Aisha Animashaun, Awori, Johnson and Olutunda in Ilupeju; Association Avenue, Kayode Adebanji in Ejigbo; Olutosin Ajayi in Ajao Estate; Ayanboye Street, Kosofe and Fawole Street in Shomolu.

Reacting to the prompt compliance, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Communities & Communcations, Mr. Kehinde Bamigbetan, disclosed that random checks and feedbacks from the officials of the Community Development Associations (CDAs) with pictorial evidence demonstrate that residents have embraced the policy.

Commending Lagosians for their support for the policy, Bamigbetan urged community leaders to mobilise more landlords behind the policy to ensure that the objectives of the administration are achieved.

It would be recalled that the administration revived the open gate in daytime policy to facilitate the patrol of neighourhoods by the police, provide speedier access of the Fire Services to landlords in need and save pregnant women in labour from avoidable death.

The government took decision following appeals from the public and the difficulties encountered by state officials to provide emergency services to the public.

Ogun provides 23 communities with water schemes

The Ogun State Government, through the Ministry of Rural Development, has provided water schemes for 23 communities to ensure uninterrupted flow of potable water.

The Director of Rural Electrification in the ministry, Mr. AbdulRasaq Ojetola, said in a statement that the schemes comprised 7.5KVA power generator, tanks, pipes and fetching platforms, among others.

“Government has deemed it fit to provide potable water and adequate sanitation in an affordable way as well as the required infrastructure to facilitate and enhance socio-economic development across the local government areas,” he said.

Ojetola said the ministry, through its Department of Rural Water Supply, had also constructed solar powered borehole water schemes in Ikereku Olodi, Abeokuta North; Yewa Disu, Yewa North; Sigi Baido, Ewekoro; Lisa, Odeda; Ehin Osun, Ijebu North East; Jabata, Imeko Afon; Osunbudepo, Ijebu North; Fakale, Sagamu; Areago, Obafemi Owode; and Oguru, Ijebu East.

He said the ministry had also organised a programme tagged: ‘Ile kan, igbonse kan, ko je lilo’, ‘One house, one toilet for use’ to improve sanitation in the rural communities.

“Hence, there will be significant investment that will confirm the state government’s presence to the rural dwellers through the provision of potable water, rural electrification projects and construction of roads,” he added.
